Derrick Ruiz is a rare creature, a native Angeleno and is proud of a long lineage of family that have realized the American Dream, an opportunity his grandfather fought for in World War II. Whether it is biking the Venice strand, surfing Malibu, skiing our local mountains, catching a Lakers game or enjoying any number of other cultural and entertainment jewels, Derrick revels in the Southern California lifestyle.
Derrick began his long and storied real estate career in 1986 at the tender age of 24 and it was no cakewalk. He began with no contacts – none of his friends were buying or selling real estate – but he stuck with it and learned the business. It was his first and last career choice.
Derrick has weathered many cycles in the real estate market since the days when fax machines were unheard of and computers were showing up as dumb MLs terminals. The market took off in ’88 and ’89, only to implode in the 1990’s with soaring bankruptcies and foreclosures. Like other agents, he limped along until around 1996, when the market finally started heating up again. Of course, the market exploded again in 1998 and was white-hot until the peak of 2005, when it started its decline in 2006 with the financial turmoil of falling prices, short sales, bankruptcies and other economic hardship that affected most of us. Fortunately, the real estate market made a recovery around 2012 and came back bigger and better than ever.
The one constant throughout the ups and downs of the market is Derrick's marketing savvy, integrity and fierce negotion to protet his client's interests and ensure their success.
He has carved a niche in selling investment properties and his experience spans small residential income properties, larger multifamily buildings, development opportunities, short sales, probates, vacant land, commercial, rehab opportunities, foreclosures, and 1031 tax deferred exchanges. Most of his work is in Venice Beach and the surrounding Westside, but has clients throughout all of LA County.
Drawing from his hard-won experience, Derrick has wrote and published a book for REALTORS® called "Cloud Agent" and is working on his next publication.
